Come on a tour with us!

Our most-asked question is: How does the composting part work?

Well, come find out!

Grab your trailer with empty receptacles from our HQ and come with us…

But first! You’d better make sure each receptacle has a couple scoops of sawdust in the bottom, that’ll help absorb the first few deposits and cut down on their odor.

You’ve also got a bin full of sawdust on your trailer. When you stop at each toilet, you can refill the sawdust bin next to the toilet seat.

When people make their deposit, they add a scoop of sawdust instead of flushing! That covers everything up, keeping the smell down and the flies away.

Once you’ve visited all the TE toilets in town and swapped out any full receptacles for the empty ones, make your way back to HQ with your full bins and get ready to add them to the compost pile! Right now we’re filling up Pile #7.

When you get there, take the pile’s temperature first to see how it’s doing. Over 131*F means it’s hot enough to kill any potential human pathogens!

Now to empty the bins. First, roll back the mesh door at the front of the pile. Then, use your pitchfork to push back the layer of straw on top of the pile. (That’s there to help keep the pile warm and the flies away!)

Next, use the dolly to wheel each bin over to the pile, and dump it in!

If anything is particularly stinky, that means it needs more sawdust! You can add a couple shovelfuls to the bin before you dump it all into the pile.

Use the hose to rinse out the bin and lid, and dump that into the pile too.

The urinals each drain into a jug, which keeps the bins easier to handle. You can add each jug to the pile and rinse it out as well!

All that’s left is to give each bin a quick scrub…

…and lay them out on the trailer to dry!

Thank you for all your help!

Now step back and admire the view. Isn’t our compost site pretty?

No? Just us?
